There comes a time, for most people, when that panic moment comes, and decluttering now is not an option, but a necessity. Another family member informs you that he or she needs to move in with you, and you need to create space. Your mother-in-law decides that next weekend is the perfect time for a quick visit. Or, you need to stage your home for a quick sale due to an unexpected job transfer.

Whatever the reason, whether you look forward to the task or not, you need some emergency decluttering tips to help you get your decluttering underway. And my friend, you have come to the right place!

Here are some great emergency declutting tips to help you get started!

  • Walk around your house and search for obvious and not-so-obvious GARBAGE! Get rid of doubles of things, and also packaging or boxes that you think you will need IF you move “one day”. Be tough on yourself and throw out broken items that you’ve been hanging onto for “sentimental reasons”. You will not miss them.
  • Fill up a bin with items for a charitable organization, and drop it off before you change your mind!
  • Pack up excess knick-knacks for an emergency decluttering of your shelves and table-tops.. Even if you plan to take them out again after your guests leave, doing so will give a much less cluttered look to your house.
  • Take everything off of the floor of one room, wash the floor, and once you’re done, only replace the things that really belong there.
  • Throw your old catalogue pile into the recycle bin. If you find later you miss something, it is always available on-line.
  • Make use of decorative box sets. These are available everywhere these days and are invaluable as they look both attractive and orderly where-ever you place them, plus they can conceal numerous miscelaneous “stuff”.
  • Search through the bathroom and fill at LEAST a small box with lotions, medications, and makeup that are past expiry date and throw it out.
  • If you are sorely lacking cupboard space, purchase a pantry cupboard with doors and stick it in a spare bedroom. These make great closets, and you can fit (or hide) a LOT of things on their shelves. Close the doors and you will be amazed at how much you decluttered!

The need for an emergency decluttering happens to everyone at some point. Whether for emotional factors such as your in-laws coming for a visit the day after tomorrow, or because you are all of a sudden utterly TIRED OF being embarrassed about your cluttered home, these emergency decluttering tips can help clear the clutter for good… or at the very least hide the clutter nicely away for a quick fix!
